Islam and Food Sustainability: Dua and Islamic Ways to Save Food
This article finds out what Islam says about food, the need to combat food wastage, and the duas (or prayers) associated with food. We will also emphasize those Islamic practices that specifically promote the efficient use of food and its conservation.
The Role of Food in Islam: The Ability to Show Wrestling to the Affection of Allah
What is the greatest treasure that one can own? In Islamโs picture, food is a great blessing that has been bestowed upon the people by Allah. All the food and drink that one has should be consumed with the utmost care and appreciation. The Quran mentions food in several verses as one of the many things to be earned and respected, not to be disregarded. For instance, in Surah 2, verses 172 of the Quran, God commands his followers by saying the following:
โOh you who have believed, eat of the good things which We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah if it is indeed Him that you worship.โ
This statement is a reminder to its followers of the importance of food in Islam. Food in Islam is not only eating as in a hungry sense. It also includes being responsible for other peopleโs needs, which is not over-consuming or throwing away half-eaten portions. In Islam there exists a very interesting saying that goes like this: Food is so important that it cannot be wasted and it is viewed as a total disgrace to do so.
Islamic Values and Food Waste Management Efforts
1. Self-control and Moderation
In all matters, including eating, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) prescribed moderation as well. He is said to have said:
“The son of Adam fills no vessel worse than his stomach. It is sufficient for the son of Adam to eat a few mouthfuls to keep his back straight. If he has to eat more, then let him fill one third with food, a third with drink and a third with air.” (Sunan al-Tirmidhi)
This technique of moderation can help avoid overeating and promote wise consumption of food where there will also be less chances of leftovers going to waste in the fridge.
2. Inclusiveness through Sharing and Charity
Another way Islam seeks to lessen waste is through the sharing of food. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) stated the following:
“He is not a believer whose stomach is filled while his neighbor goes hungry.” (Sunan al-Kubra)
This helps provide food to those in need. Hence by sharing food with those in need, Muslims will be able to ensure that surplus food is not wasted. It is a practice which benefits the needy but also reduces food wastage as well as nourishes the community.
3. Consuming Leftovers
Islam teaches and emphasizes the need to avoid wastage and instead consume leftovers as opposed to dumping them. In his lifetime, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised that some food should always be saved for future consumption. Never in the past has he been reported to said:
“When you cook food, cook a large amount so that you may have some leftover and it will serve you for another meal.” (Sahih Muslim)
Leftover food can be recycled into another dish without too much trouble saving resources and making sure that food does not go to waste.
Cursing over Waste and Sorrow for Food Never Makes it Tasty
In Islam, duas are central in requesting goodness in the food and averting waste as it is considered something sacred. It is recommended that every Muslim says duas before and after their meals in order to show appreciation and avoid food wastage.
1. Dua Before Eating
As part of preparing for the meal, it is a common practice for Muslims to say the following dua:
“Bismillah wa โala barakatillah.”
(“In the name of Allah, and with the blessings of Allah.”)
It thanks the Almighty as well as engages the attention of Muslims to be more careful about the food. Through these words, Allah is asked to bless the people with His mercy over the food.
2. Dua After Food In Islam
Muslims after meals say the following dua:
“Alhamdulillah alladhi at’amana wa saqana wa jaโalana muslimin.”
(“All praise is due to Allah who has fed us and given us drink, and made us Muslims”)
The dua is about acknowledging Allah who provided the food. This dua also reminds people to always be grateful to Allah and appreciate the food that is given to them, so that they will not waste it.
Protection of Environment As A Muslim In Islam
Islam does not only encourage good purchase but also the morality of preserving the environment. The Quran stresses on the proper use of natural resources. In Surah Al-Aโraf (7:31), Allah says:
“O children of Adam! Take your adornment at every masjid and eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess.”
